The New Jersey Devils are clinging to third in the Metropolitan Division, and they're about to be without star goalie Jacob Markström.

Team Sweden was dealt a blow on Jan. 22 when New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markström was injured during the second period of a game against the Boston Bruins.

The former Calgary Flames goalie stayed down and needed assistance getting off the ice, eventually skating on his own. New Jersey head coach Sheldon Keefe said Markström "will miss some time," but he was in good spirits about this possible lower-body injury.

The apparent leg injury to New Jersey Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom on Wednesday night didn’t look good. Now, they hold their breath that they’ve avoided the worst possible outcome.

Markstrom is 21-9-5 with a 2.20 goals-against average, .912 save percentage and three shutouts in 36 games for the Devils (27-17-6), who are in third place in the Metropolitan Division behind the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes.

The New Jersey Devils could be without their starting netminder for a bit. In Wednesday’s game against the Boston Bruins, Devils netminder and former Calgary Flame Jacob Markström suffered an injury after Justin Brazeau crashed into him.

The Devils recalled goaltender Isaac Poulter from AHL Utica on Friday, per a team release. He’ll serve as Jake Allen’s backup for the next four to six weeks after the team confirmed starter Jacob Markström sustained an MCL sprain in Wednesday’s game against the Bruins.

Isaac Poulter has been called up from the Utica Comets, though it appears Nico Daws might also get an opportunity with the New Jersey Devils. The changes stem from Jacob Markstrom's injury, which is expected to keep him out for at least four weeks.
